Here's an interesting idea. This Seattle-based group is basically seeking to out-absurd the absurd, and I think I like it. They are trying to get Initiative 957 on the ballot, and they're calling it the Defense of Marriage Initiative. If passed in Washington state, I-957 would:
- add the phrase, “who are capable of having children with one another” to the legal definition of marriage;
- require that couples married in Washington file proof of procreation within three years of the date of marriage or have their marriage automatically annulled;
- require that couples married out of state file proof of procreation within three years of the date of marriage or have their marriage classed as “unrecognized;”
- establish a process for filing proof of procreation; and
- make it a criminal act for people in an unrecognized marriage to receive marriage benefits.
Since this is more or less the exact, tortured line of reasoning that gay marriage foes have put across--and successfully in Washington state, I might add--to disallow homosexual marriage, I think it's a great idea. The only problem is that if we lived in Washington, Chip and I would have had our marriage annulled in 2001. Oh, and I would be an illegitimate child.
